Meditation doesn't work for all insomnia. It works best for people that experience stress and anxiety related insomnia. If something is on your mind or if you just associate bad feelings with your past sleeping attempts, this can really help.
Simple Breathing
This is probably the simplest form of meditation you can do. It doesn't require much on your part. Just lie down in bed and get in the most comfortable position you can. Just focus on your breathing.
Sometimes that's a little too simple for focusing, so I always try to make sure I'm taking deep breaths in the nose and exhaling out the mouth. It takes a lot of focus or I'll just end up with my old breathing habits.
You'll start to notice that you're so engaged in focusing on breathing that you can't think about other things. Your mind will start to clear. The increased oxygen your body from the breathing will improve your ability to fall asleep.
Relaxing The Body
When it comes to relaxing the body, it takes a bit of concentration, but it is well worth it. You want to continue with the same simple breathing from the pervious method, but this time you're going to be using your thoughts a bit more.
You're going to start to feel your toes. Just focus on them and feel the tension of their muscles. Than allow each toe to relax. Just have them, one at a time, relax. You want to work your way up each leg, resting all the muscles on the way up to your hips.
Than start focusing on the tips of your fingers and apply the same methods until you have relaxed both arms.
You'll want to continue up through your torso and up through the neck. Finally you want to rest all your face muscles and the muscles on the top of your head. At this point your body will feel great and be completely relaxed.
Blue Energy
Relaxing the mind is probably the best way for you to sleep, so I've come up with a great exercise you can do called "Blue Energy"
- Close your eyes and start to imagine your body is full of blue gas. It all swarming all through your body and filling up every part of the body.
- You'll want to start with your toes, than feet and up your legs, start taking this energy out of these areas. As the energy leaves, feel these parts relax. Start with the toes and work up to your feet, than legs. Bring the energy up to your stomach area.
- You'll want to apply the same technique for your arms.
- The same thing will be applied with your head, down through your neck and chest.
- All this blue energy will be contained in your stomach area and it should have all your worries, stresses and anything else that is on your mind.
- Next, you'll want to shoot this ball of energy up through the top of your head, outside of your house and up into the sky.
I know this sounds sort of silly, but there is a profound effect our mind has with imagery. It fits in with NLP psychology. Your mind starts to associate all that stress and bad feelings with that blue energy.
When this blue energy leaves your body and disappears into the sky, your mind is forced to think that it has left. It seems silly, but that's how you'll feel. Your body will be fully relaxed and your mind should be clear.
