Health conditions, pain and discomfort will impair sleep and this can be a primary reason why a person can experience chronic insomnia. A survey showed that around 22% of adults had trouble sleeping due to this fact.
- Leg Problems - Many people have leg problems throughout the night. It doesn't necessarily have to be a condition. Some people get leg cramps at times during the night that really hurt.
- Medical Problems - There are many medical problems that can cause chronic insomnia…
- Allergies
- Arthritis
- Cancer
- Fibromyalgia
- Heart Disease
- Gastrosophageal
- Reflux Disease
- Hypertension
- Asthma
- Emphysema
- Rheumatologic Conditions
- Alzheimer's Disease
- Parkinson's Disease
- Hyperthyroidism
- ADD/ADHD
- Medication - Typically antidepressant medication will have the biggest effect (fluxetine, bupropion, theophylline, lamotrigine, felbamate, beta blockers, and beta agonists).
It is estimated that 15% of chronic insomnia sufferers has this due to substance abuse, especially alcohol and cocaine. One or two drinks at dinner can actually help initiate sleep. The problem is when it is used in excess on a regular basis. It ends up fragmenting sleep and some of the worst insomnia can happen during periods of withdrawal, which can take some time.
Lastly, shift work can have a big effect on your sleep. We best sleep when it is consistent. If we go to bed every night at the same time, we're most likely going to achieve the same result. When you do shift work, especially when it affects your sleep, you're going to effect what your body is used to. If each day keeps changing on the body it won't know how to properly handle it.
